Down Harrison Avenue from the top: a park on the Mineral Belt Trail, the mining museum next door, Healy House's guided tours, Melanzana's open-shopping side, the Tabor Opera House, and steak, pizza or the Silver Dollar at the bottom. Wednesday to Sunday suits it best.

Leadville is the highest incorporated city in North America, at 10,152 feet, in the middle of Colorado about 100 miles west of Denver, according to the county’s tourism panel. The town’s main street is Harrison Avenue, and everything below is on it or just off it, from the park at 1017 Harrison down to the opera house at 308. Park once at Ice Palace Park and walk south; the car is back up the avenue at the end. The visitor center at 460 Harrison is on the way, open daily 10 am–5 pm in summer and, its maps page says, “extended weekends in winter,” with hiking and biking maps.
Ice Palace Park at 1017 Harrison Avenue is a Lake County park with a grass field, a pavilion and shaded picnic tables, on the Mineral Belt Trail and beside the library and the mining museum. The county’s tourism panel gives parking off West 10th Street or Harrison Avenue. The paved trail is about 11.6 miles around town; a short stretch on foot from here is the outdoor part of this walk, and a longer ride is a separate plan.
Getting there: park at the park. Best for: a picnic at the start or the end, and the first look at the trail.
The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum at 120 West 9th Street, next to the park, is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday 10 am–4 pm, closed Monday. A $20 combo ticket also covers the Matchless Mine, which is closed for the season until about Memorial Day; Lake County residents get in free. A gallery on Colorado’s 150 years of statehood opened on August 1, 2026, and a temporary exhibit on the Climax observatory runs to January 10, 2027.
Getting there: on foot from the park. Best for: the mining history the rest of the avenue was built on, on any day but Monday.
History Colorado’s Healy House and Dexter Cabin at 912 Harrison Avenue, the 1878 house and the 1879 cabin, is open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am–4 pm, with house tours at 10 am, 11:30 am, 1 pm and 2:30 pm. A house tour takes about an hour; children and members are free. Its page does not say whether it closes for the winter, so call 719-486-0487 before a cold-season visit.
Getting there: back to Harrison Avenue and south. Best for: the Victorian side of the silver boom, timed to a tour.
Melanzana at 716 Harrison Avenue has made its clothing in Leadville since 1994 and is open daily 10 am–6 pm, closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The south side of the store is open shopping, no appointment: socks, hats, overstock and vintage. The full line on the north side is by appointment only, booked on its How to Shop page, two items per appointment, with one appointment every six months.
Getting there: south down Harrison Avenue. Best for: a hat or socks without a booking; book ahead for anything else.
Horace Tabor’s 1879 Tabor Opera House at 308 Harrison Avenue runs public group tours of the museum, the theater, the stage and the dressing rooms from late May to the middle of October, Friday to Sunday, with tickets online or at the door; its calendar showed October Historic Tours through October 18. From October 11 stage and dressing-room access may be limited while The Addams Family (October 22–24) is prepared. The rest of the year it is concerts, plays and films on the calendar.
Getting there: south down Harrison Avenue, past the visitor center. Best for: a weekend tour before mid-October, or an evening show.
Three kitchens at the bottom of the walk. Quincys Steak & Spirits at 416 Harrison Avenue opens at 4 pm (to 8 pm Sunday to Thursday, 9 pm Friday and Saturday): filet mignon Sunday to Thursday, prime rib Friday and Saturday. The Silver Dollar Saloon at 315 Harrison dates itself to 1879 and is open noon to 1 am daily, but its kitchen serves only noon to 6 pm Wednesday to Saturday and noon to 5 pm Sunday. High Mountain Pies at 115 West 4th Street serves pizza, wings and salads 11 am–10 pm every day.
Getting there: on foot down Harrison Avenue; High Mountain Pies is on West 4th Street. Best for: dinner at Quincys or High Mountain Pies any night; a meal at the Silver Dollar before its kitchen closes.
Drive times are estimates for normal conditions and vary with traffic, weather and construction; check a live routing service before you set out. The county’s tourism panel puts Leadville about 100 miles west of Denver and 128 miles northwest of Colorado Springs, and says every highway into Lake County is part of the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway. The City of Leadville links COtrip for real-time travel information.
The Tabor Opera House says an accessible entrance on its south side reaches the auditorium and part of the tour, and that its Harrison Avenue gift shop and first-floor storefront room are accessible; the upper floors are not. History Colorado says the Healy House tour is not fully wheelchair accessible. The county’s tourism panel says the Mineral Belt Trail is accessible under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Step-free entrances and accessible restrooms at the mining museum, Melanzana and the three restaurants, and the state of the sidewalks and curb ramps on Harrison Avenue, have not been confirmed and are not claimed here; contact a business directly before relying on it. Corrections and additions to this section are welcome and published with their date.
