Leadville out of season: what is open from October to May

The mining museum stays open all year and the train runs weekly; the Matchless Mine, the Tabor's public tours and Turquoise Lake's boat ramps wait for summer. Ski Cooper aims for December 9, the rink for December, and a fire closure covers forest land south of Turquoise Lake through December 31.

· Checked October 10, 2026

Several of Leadville’s best-known places keep a summer season that runs roughly from Memorial Day to Labor Day or mid-October, and the town sits at 10,152 feet. What follows is what the operators and agencies posted on 10 October 2026 for the months until the summer of 2027. Hours change with the season, so the listings linked below carry the current lines; call before a winter trip.

Open all year

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum at 120 West 9th Street is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday 10 am–4 pm, with a temporary exhibit on the Climax observatory running to January 10, 2027. On Harrison Avenue, Melanzana is open daily 10 am–6 pm except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, and Quincys, the Silver Dollar Saloon and High Mountain Pies post no seasonal change to their hours. FREIGHT on East 9th Street calls itself a year-round venue; its October and November 2026 calendar has Boxcar Bar evenings and trivia, and it is taking vendors for its Motherlode Holiday Market.

The Leadville Railroad runs daily from Memorial Day weekend through September and weekly from October to April. Its Oktoberfest rides run through October, Holiday Express trips start in November 2026, and Winter Express trips are two hours; departure times are on its booking calendar.

Waiting for summer

The Matchless Mine, the Tabors’ silver mine east of town, is open from about Memorial Day to Labor Day and was closed for the season on 10 October. The Tabor Opera House runs its public tours from late May to the middle of October, Friday to Sunday; its October Historic Tours run through October 18, and after that its calendar lists shows: The Addams Family on October 22–24, Beetlejuice on October 30 and The Nightmare Before Christmas on November 1.

At Turquoise Lake the Forest Service had the boat ramps open May 1 to September 7 in 2026 and says the facilities close in winter because of ice and snow. The visitor center at 460 Harrison Avenue is open daily 10 am–5 pm in summer; for winter its maps page says only “extended weekends,” without times, so call 719-486-3900.

Healy House and Dexter Cabin is open Wednesday to Sunday 10 am–4 pm with tours at 10, 11:30, 1 and 2:30, but History Colorado’s page does not say whether it closes for the winter; call 719-486-0487.

Winter, when the snow comes

Ski Cooper on Tennessee Pass lists its 2026–27 opening day as Wednesday, December 9, weather permitting. Lake County’s Huck Finn Ice Rink at 445 Maple Street runs from December to February, weather permitting (the county’s facilities page says to March), with skate rentals and a snack bar; on 10 October its page still showed the 2025/26 season as closed and had not announced the next one, so call 719-839-5476.

The Mineral Belt Trail is groomed in winter, and the county’s tourism panel lists Nordic and skate skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking on it; the county posts the grooming through the Nordic Pulse app on its Winter Groomed Trails page; in 2025/26 grooming ended early for lack of snow. Cycles of Life on Harrison Avenue rents fat bikes and classic and skate ski packages ($45 a day) and tunes skis in winter; it is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. The Leadville National Fish Hatchery lists snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as winter activities; its office is open Monday to Friday 7 am–3:30 pm.

The Willow Fire closure

The Forest Service’s Willow Fire Area Closure is in effect from October 1 to December 31, 2026 unless rescinded. It closes National Forest land south of Turquoise Lake, along the tree line on Mount Massive’s eastern slope, east to the Main Mt. Massive Trailhead and along the north side of Halfmoon Creek, and its northern edge follows County Road 4, Hagerman Pass Road and Busk Creek. The listings for the Mount Massive Trailhead, the Mount Elbert trailheads and the fish hatchery, whose trails meet the Colorado Trail, all carry it; the order does not name Mount Elbert. Separately, the Forest’s alerts page lists a closure of Turquoise Lake Road (County Road 4) dated April 7, 2026, with access by County Road 9C. The county’s Know Before You Go page, updated after 20 August, said downtown Leadville’s restaurants, shops and lodging were open and named the Mineral Belt Trail among the open areas east of town.

The Leadville Ranger District at 810 Front Street (719-486-0749, 8 am–4:30 pm, closed on federal holidays) answers questions about what is open inside the closure line; the Forest’s alerts page also listed the offices as closed on October 12.
